I use the Apple’s 12.9 iPad Pro for both personal and business use. I also invested in the iPad Pro Smart Keyboard and have mastered the handful of keyboard shortcuts to try and emulate the speed I can achieve with my MacBook Pro and iMac keyboards.

Over the last 4-5 months I have issues with the keyboard when opening the iPad for use. The keyboard won’t connect to the iPad and none of the key actions result in any response including simple typing.

This accessory is not supported by this device

I tried the usual tricks, disconnecting the keyboard and carrying out a soft reset of the iPad.  (Press and hold the Home + Power buttons at the same time for 10 seconds and release all buttons when the Apple logo comes up on the screen.)

None of these actions worked.

I then posted the same issue on the MacPower Users Facebook page and had a number of responses sharing the same issues. For the most part other users contacted Apple and it was identified that there issue was hardware related. Some even managed to have Apple exchange the keyboard.

I decided to follow suit and contacted Apple support on “chat.” After running through the history above we resorted to a full hard reset of the iPad. (Connect by cable to iTunes and click Restore iPad.) Please ensure that you have a backup of your iPad before doing this as it deletes everything! 

I am delighted to advise that this seems to have worked and I now have full functionality when both using the iPad and waking from sleep.

    1. To “hard reset” you need to connect your iPad by cable to iTunes and click Restore iPad. Please note that this deletes all content on your iPad so if you try this you will need to have firstly backed up your iPad and then have to restore it once completed.

  1. This didn’t not work for me. Have second appointment with Apple Saturday, they didn’t do anything the first time because I didn’t have the original receipt. CRAZY
