From grain to modern art #sustainability

Heatherwick Studio have redeveloped a former grain silo to create the “Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa,” the world’s largest museum of African contemporary art.

The silos were connected to rail infrastructure and the port and stored corn from all over the country for over nine decades since their construction in 1921. Standing 57m tall the silos were the tallest building in South Africa until the building was closed in the 1990s.

The Zeizt MOCAA is a new non for profit cultural institution. Its mandate is to collect, preserve, research and exhibit contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. Established in 2013 it is the first major institution dedicated to contemporary art in Africa.
